La Divina Caricatura by Mabou Mines

After several years of work on tough bunraku style puppetry with the master of magic, Lee Breuer, and puppet director Jessica Scott, La Divina Caricatura came to life at La Mama theater in December 2013. I was pleased to play the feet of the dog, the feet of the preacher, and the sadomasochistic cat and telephone.

Firebird at City Center

My favorite parts to perform in the puppet ballet set to Strivainky's Firebird piece were: being the top of the tree, and puppeteering the cloak of the evil Koschei!  What a great team of people to work with! Thank you directors Chris Green and David Neumann.

Flying Squirrels

I'd been planning to be a flying squirrel for Halloween for two years.  This year I got it together and had a great time squirreling with Twist's giant spider at the library tower and again at the Taj Ma Harlem!

Dogugaeshi Tour

The serene and powerful and overwhelming puppet show, Dogugaeshi by Basil Twist came out of storage for a sweet Fall tour in 2013.  One of my favorite puppet shows, it was wonderful to perform again, with new and old cast members.  The Tandem Otter team performed at Hamilton College in NY (who knew a piƱata and panaramic pictures could be so much fun), the Japan Society in NYC, Redcat in L.A. and U.C. Berkeley.

Halloween Puppet Parlor 2013

I performed in my Present Attention Disc mask at the Dream Music Puppet Parlor for Halloween.  I enjoyed creating a really simple, spooky, and weird piece.  Thank you Basil for the direction and thank you Wayne for your amazing piano fingers.  a bit of video

Forklift Ballet

I am ever proud of my courageous friends for mounting strange projects with heavy machinery.  This time I got to dance with a pallet jack in a forklift ballet designed by Sarah Mac.  Performed at the Queens Museum parking lot during the Empire drive-in installation.  Oct. 2013

Seafoam Sleepwalk

An intrepid journey by non-seafaring puppeteers led us to the La Jolla Playhouse to perform a new puppet show by Basil Twist in the Pacific Ocean in October 2013.  It was an adventure.

Burning Bathhouse

Burning Man was divine in 2013.  I camped with the Bathhouse in the French Quarter and enjoyed reading people's bath salts in the front room as well as assisting people in the showers at the back.  New friends and frolic mixed with wild abandon were highlights.

The Moving Party

Perpetually rising rents drove us out of our home and workspace last July 2013.  It was bittersweet, but the villagers threw a fantastic getting out party at the SheWok Village, which was open to the public.  The revelry was maintained primarily by our last minute booking of our weekend subletter's jazz band on the roof. But my favorite moment was kicking out a massive drunk man at 3 am in my sailor hat and silver short shorts.

Margolis Training

June 2013 I traipsed up to the catskills for another session of Professor Certification in the Margolis Method of Physical Acting.  I continued my research in performing with folding chairs.

Kate teaching Moving Objects class June 4-6

Movement for Puppetry Class: "Moving Objects"
taught by puppeteer Kate Brehm
June 4, 5, and 6th 7-9pm at Triskelion Arts Space

A single class costs $20, or sign up for all three for $50

Moving Objects is a class for performers who want to hone the craft of manipulating objects, be they puppets, props, sets, or costumes.  Understanding your own body in space and the energy that flows through it is essential to being able to breath life into all objects around you.  Considering the potential of objects like chairs, sticks, and bouncy balls will expand your vision as to how the design in your theater can itself perform.

This series of 3 classes is a taster for a longer 15 class series.  Each session will be 2 hours long.  Please come dressed to move in solid colors.  We will work in bare feet.

Taught by puppeteer and movement artist, Kate Brehm.  Kate is artistic director of imnotlost, an internationally active experimental puppetry company based in NYC. Known for its surreal and arresting visual theater, imnotlost also produces thought provoking interactive events.  Kate tours the world as a performing puppeteer for Basil Twist and has taught puppetry at the Central School of Speech and Drama and Royal Holloway University in London. www.katebrehm.com

Jesse

and look at me, I designed the set and costumes for a 15 member cast of the odd and "out there" production of Jesse, directed by Sophie Amieva at the Experimental Theater Wing of NYU.  As always, I am using my skills as a puppeteer to create performing design where its unexpected.  Thanks for the opportunity Sophie and ETW.

The Rite of Spring has Risen

Oh what a show it was.  for real.  It was a marvel to develop and perform.  I had the joy of not only puppeteering in the show, but also being even a little bit further on the inside of it acting as associate technical director.  Not much sleep in that. But georgeous.  Hope we run it again sometime.  By Basil Twist.  Commissioned by UNC Chapel Hill.

Dirt. under your feet. under your nails. soon to be above all of our heads. dark, gritty, and glorious. Dirt is life infusing! food and flowers burst forth through the soil. We revel in getting dirty! or getting down and dirty. Dirt is bad! It is rotten and filthy and full of worms! People are meant to be clean, right? not supposed to be dirty.… the subversiveness of dirt… think about it. talk about it.
